IMAGE ’21 Boasts Impressive Lineup of Keynote Speakers

The International Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy, or IMAGE ’21, the integrated annual event of AAPG and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in conjunction with the Society for Sedimentary Geology, is all set to be held online and in Denver, Colo., Sept. 26 to Oct. 1. The event will bring together many of the greatest minds and leaders from multiple disciplines of the geosciences sector, which includes an impressive lineup of keynote speakers that include IHS Markit’s Daniel Yergin, Kirsten Siebach of the Mars Perseverance mission and Kirk Johnson of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

Industry Changes Mean New Job Opportunities

The petroleum industry has changed and is under attack. Many want to stop production of carbon-based fuels. There is a logic to this if we look to the future. We need to sustain energy production and fill the holes in the current alternative energy industries like solar, wind turbines, geothermal and advanced batteries. This does not mean oil industry jobs will be eliminated. They will just change.

The Anadarko “Super” Basin: 10 key characteristics to understand its productivity

The Anadarko Super Basin has similarities and differences with the other approximately 50 worldwide super basins. It has numerous giant oil fields, but they are smaller, stacked traps. It has produced 50 BBOE with the potential for another 50 BBOE, especially in unconventional reservoirs.

Utah FORGE Applies Unconventional Resource Methods for Geothermal Research

New ground-breaking advances are currently being made at the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy using methods borrowed from the oil and gas industry for unconventional hydrocarbon development. Recently, geothermal history was made when Utah FORGE successfully completed the first of two highly deviated deep wells in the hot, hard granite that will form the geothermal reservoir.

The Opportunities of Change: Denver in September!

The key to effective strategic planning is that at some point you have to ask yourself three questions: Does our strategic process produce a plan that’s “real?” Does our plan really work for the organization? Is anybody doing anything? Your AAPG Executive Committee has focused on strategic planning and now we are answering those questions, especially No. 3. Change is critical to taking advantage of new opportunities. One of my favorite quotes on change is from Albert Einstein, “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”

What Does the Cancellation of the Keystone XL Pipeline Mean?

Desperate to ship crude oil from the oil-rich province of Alberta to the Irving Oil Refinery on Canada’s east coast, Cenovus Energy took the path of least resistance last summer. It sent oil 710 miles through the Trans Mountain Pipeline to its west coast terminal in British Columbia, loaded it on a tanker, and began a 7,500-mile journey – through the Panama Canal – and up the eastern seaboard to New Brunswick. To an outsider, that statement might seem absurd, when the distance between Alberta’s prolific oil sands and the refinery is 2,600 miles – less than a third of the distance traveled by Cenovus. Yet, it was considered a successful transaction, given the fact that there is no pipeline connecting Alberta, the location of the world’s third largest oil reserves, to Canada’s east coast, the location of the country’s largest refinery.

Arizona Teacher Wins 2020 Teacher of the Year Award

It’s a familiar but still inspiring story: Young students have their lives changed – their entire understanding of the Earth and geologic processes – because of a single person. Their teacher. It happens in classrooms that overlook commanding mountain vistas. It happens in urban jungles and near suburban malls, in isolated towns and concrete expanses. Geoscience teachers get the opportunity to share their knowledge and passion with students, and in that experience the world changes – often for both the teacher and the student, always for the better. “I am a teacher because I love what I do, and I can think of no greater good than cultivating the minds, souls and character of the young people who will lead our world one day,” said Rebekah Kienenberger, an Earth and space science teacher at Arete Preparatory Academy in Gilbert, Ariz., and the 2020 AAPG Teacher of the Year.
