AAPG considers student member participation a vital part of our association. The Student Chapters Program plays a critical role by providing an avenue where undergraduate and graduate geology students can engage in meaningful networking opportunities, and connect with professionals in geological careers, both inside and outside of academia.

The Student Chapter Program is a wonderful way for student members and their advisors to build camaraderie around a shared passion, and to multiply knowledge and field experiences among a group in a casual, fun setting. Those connections made are of benefit to the chapters’ universities, to the students, to the AAPG and to the geologic profession as a whole.

It only takes a few simple steps to assure the success of your chapter:

  • Set specific and realistic goals.
  • Hold meetings regularly.
  • Tell us what your chapter is doing.

Student Chapter Funding Opportunities
L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant Program

The AAPG Foundation's L. Austin Weeks (LAW) Undergraduate Grant program annually awards deserving undergraduate level geoscience students and student-led geoscience associations (student chapters, associations and clubs) with $500 grants.

These grants are intended to support the educational endeavors of undergraduate geoscience students and their student-led organizations. Thanks to generous contributors, including L. Austin Weeks and Marta Weeks-Wulf, the Foundation will grant $85,000 in funds to geoscience students and student associations in 2017. Click here for more information.

Work General Store at ACE

Student Chapters who attend the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition may sign up to work the General Store during the convention. Volunteering to work in the AAPG General Store and Bookstore is an easy and fun way to earn funds for your chapter while attending ACE.

Student Chapter Awards
Outstanding Student Chapter Awards

The Outstanding Student Chapter Award honors enthusiastic student chapters, both U.S.-based and international, and new and small, that capitalize on opportunities to enrich the experiences of its membership. Those chapters that best communicate the breadth of its activities and the impact it has on formulating the education and professional demeanor of its membership will be considered for an Outstanding Student Chapter Award. Click here for more information.

Student Chapter YouTube Video Awards

Student Chapter YouTube Video Awards are given to chapters who go above and beyond to capture their chapter and activities in a three minute-long YouTube video. Entries are judged and chosen by AAPG’s Student Chapter Committee. Awards include $1,500 for the 1st place video, $700 for 2nd and $300 for 3rd place. All awards are presented at the Student Chapter Reception at the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition. Click here for more information.

Student Chapter Events and Speaking Opportunities
Student Expos

Throughout the year there are opportunities for geoscience students to network and learn more about available careers in the energy industry. If you are an undergraduate or graduate-level geoscience student, check out an event near you. Click here for more information.

Distinguished Lecture Program

The Distinguished Lecture Program has offered the world's brightest, most forward-thinking geoscientists on speaking tours designed to disseminate the latest geoscience insights and updates around the world – and to inspire the next generation of geoscientists. Student Chapters may request a speaker. Click here for more information.

Visiting Geoscientist Program

The Visiting Geoscientist Program is designed to give students a chance to meet practicing geoscientists and to discuss geoscience career options. Speakers usually present a technical talk in their area of specialization as well as on career options and the best way to plan a career path. Request a VGP today.

Please Note

An annual report should be submitted to AAPG headquartersby February 1 of each year. The AAPG Student Chapters Committee references chapter reports when deciding the Outstanding Student Chapter awards each year.

When a chapter fails to submit a report they are moved to a "Suspended" status. Failure to submit two consecutive reports results in an "Inactive" status.

For more information about the program please contact [email protected].
