The main elements of the petroleum systems and migration pathways in the Berkine-Ghadames Basin, southern Tunisia, are described in this paper. Fairway maps are generated for Ordovician, Silurian, and Triassic plays in order to predict future drilling locations.

In Tunisia, most borehole temperatures used to constrain the thermal histories of sedimentary basins were previously corrected using various methods, set to best-fit domains other than the Tunisian basins. This study aimed to propose a new method of borehole temperature correction suitable for the Jeffara Basin, southeastern Tunisia.

Jurassic deposition in the Maghrebian tethys was governed by eustasy and rifting. Two periods were delineated: (1) a carbonate shelf (Rhaetian–early Pliensbachian) and (2) a platform-basin complex (early Pliensbachian–Callovian). The carbonate shelf evolved in four stages, generating three sedimentary sequences, J1 to J3, separated by boundary sea level falls, drawdown, exposure, and local erosion. Sediment facies bear evidence of sea level rises and falls. Lateral changes in lithofacies indicate shoaling and deepening upward during the Sinemurian. A major pulse of rifting with an abrupt transition from carbonate shelf to pelagic basin environments of deposition marks the upper boundary of the lower Pliensbachian carbonate shelf deposits. This rifting episode with brittle fractures broke up the Rhaetian–early Pliensbachian carbonate shelf and has created a network of grabens, half grabens, horsts, and stacked ramps. Following this episode, a relative sea level rise led to pelagic sedimentation in the rift basins with local anoxic environments that also received debris shed from uplifted ramp crests. Another major episode spanning the whole early Pliensbachian–Bajocian is suggested by early brecciation, mass flows, slumps, olistolites, erosion, pinch-outs, and sedimentary prisms. A later increase in the rates of drifting marked a progress toward rift cessation during the Late Jurassic. These Jurassic carbonates with detrital deposits and black shales as the source rocks in northeastern Tunisia may define interesting petroleum plays (pinch-out flanking ramps, onlaps, and structurally upraised blocks sealed inside grabens). Source rock maturation and hydrocarbon migration began early in the Cretaceous and reached a maximum during the late Tortonian–Pliocene Atlassic orogeny.

Since establishment of AAPG Africa in 2000, the Region’s leadership teams over the years have shown strong commitment and passion toward the Association achieving its goals for the region. Their dedicated efforts have resulted in not only an increased awareness of AAPG, but also steady growth of the Region’s membership, from 450 in 1999 to over 3,060 in June 2014.

Carbonate rocks make up the majority of reservoirs being explored and exploited in unconventional resource plays. This trip will spend five days exploring a variety of modern, mud-dominated carbonate settings in South Florida, where the elements influencing the deposition of these unique strata will be observed first-hand and used as learning points for similar ancient deposits.

The objective of this field trip is to examine the deposits of an upper slope and slope canyon to deep basin floor deepwater depositional system developing along a Pennsylvanian-age fold and thrust belt called the Ouachita Trough. The units under study are part of the Stanley Group, Jackfork Group and the overlying Atoka Group.

This field trip explores Panther Creek, a natural laboratory to explore the morphology and sedimentological processes of a meandering creek system. Panther Creek is just a short drive north from Houston, tucked away just south of The Woodlands, Texas in the Montgomery County Preserve.

The field trip will include stops at Shumard Canyon and Bone Canyon to observe the scale and internal architecture of submarine channels incising the bedrock of the relict platform. Other field-trip stops will include Stratotype Canyon, Black Stove Canyon, and Rest Area Gully to observe basin-restricted carbonate and siliclcastic sediment gravity flow deposits, carbonate channel-levee complexes, failure scours associated with the downslope transport of olistostromal blocks, and thick (>50 m) accumulations of recumbently folded deposits associated with these failure events.
