The House Natural Resources Committee recently held a hearing to discuss energy development in the Mancos shale formation of the Piceance basin, which is a geographic area that spans Colorado and Utah and much of the resource is located on federal lands. The purpose of the hearing was to highlight the release of a recent U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment which found that the Mancos shale has a large volume of recoverable energy resources.

The China Ministry of Natural Resources reported on 27-March-2020 that several breakthroughs were made during a recent trial gas hydrate production test in the South China Sea. The tested was conducted in the Shenhu sea area at a water depth of 1,225 meters, the test produced 861,400 cubic meters of gas, with an average daily production rate of 28,700 cubic meters. The ministry's geological survey bureau, together with more than 70 entities including China National Petroleum Corporation and Peking University, launched the country's second gas hydrate production test startings on 17-February-2020 and was completed on 18-March-2020.

The AAPG Petroleum Structure and Geomechanics Division (PSGD) has announced the 2016 Best Paper Awards at the Annual Convention and Exhibition in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Congratulations to William L. Ellsworth, awarded "Best Recent Publication" for "Injection-induced earthquakes, Science, v. 341, DOI: 10.1126/science.1225942".

We thank everyone for nominating the candidates. We also thank Bob Krantz, Bob Hatcher, and Gary Couples for their diligent work on the PSGD Best Paper Committee.

The Africa Region was well represented and active during the recent 2023 IMAGE in Houston, with more than a dozen Region members – including current officers, past officers and delegates – gathered for its official onsite meeting.

Attendees at the meeting discussed current membership demographics and considered individual concerns facing the Region as well as the Association overall.

AAPG recently held its first hybrid workshop on ‘Structural Geology and Our Future - The Role of Tectonic Geoscience in Energy Transition, Focusing on the Asia-Pacific Region’ which took place from 6 -7 July 2022 at Club York Sydney and Online. The workshop attracted 71 attendees (38 in-person and 33 virtually) from 42 different companies and 14 different countries.
