Due to Hurricane Laura’s landfall and severe weather conditions affecting panelists and attendees located on the US Gulf Coast, AAPG and EPF have postponed the Energy Opportunities Forum on Carbon Capture and Storage originally set for August 27. Please plan to join us to enjoy the same content at the same time on Thursday, 10 September. Experts from industry, government and academia discuss the environmental, economic and societal implications of Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS), a technology designed to reduce CO2 emissions across the energy system. Panelists from North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific share global best practices and discuss the benefits that CCUS brings both to the environment and to companies who include the technology in their portfolio.

Sequence stratigraphy is a method for stratigraphic interpretation, pioneered by Vail and colleagues in the mid 70’s, which explains the complex geometries that sediments create as they fill accommodation in response to changes in rates of sedimentation, subsidence, uplift and eustasy. This method was developed based on observations and concepts developed as early as in the 1800’s. Based on this strong scientific foundation, pioneer work from Caster, Sloss, Wheeler, Campbell, and Asquith established the basis for the methodology. These researchers established a new way to correlate stratigraphic units, demonstrating the time-transgressive nature of lithostratigraphic formations.

Both climate change and the most recent coronavirus pandemic have generated multiple impacts on society. Though on the surface the crises appear to be unrelated, they have more similarities than differences. The common elements shared by Covid-19 and climate change promote the development of comprehensive solutions that mitigate both crises simultaneously. This talk examines how actions and strategies developed for the energy transition can help to address the multiple challenges that the world faces today.

In 2011 and 2015, I presented an assessment of the yet-to-find (YTF) oil potential in the Brazilian pre-salt region, utilizing an exploration modeling tool and a stochastic simulation method (Monte Carlo) for estimating potential accumulations discovered and remaining to be discovered. Despite the robust methodology used, it is understandable that in light of the new, much lower oil prices in effect currently, the YTF oil assessment may be questioned regarding how realistic it may be in a protracted low oil price environment. In 2016 I presented such an assessment, for oil prices below US$50/bbl. Now, given even lower oil prices that may represent a new lower-for-longer scenario, I again revisit past assessments. The results are presented in the context of important geopolitical implications for assessments that point to regions in the world where oil and gas resources will likely continue to be viable despite low oil prices, and the geopolitical rearrangements this implies.
