Rock classification in the Eagle Ford Formation through integration of petrophysical, geological, geochemical, and geomechanical characterization

A reliable integrated rock classification can significantly improve unconventional reservoir productivity forecasting. Also, geomechanical properties such as in-situ stresses and presence of natural fractures must be taken into account in rock classification for completion decisions.

Deeper-water deposition in intrashelf basins: Example from the Lower Cretaceous (Albian) upper Glen Rose Formation in the Houston trough, eastern Texas

Intrashelf basins like the Houston trough can be significant depocenters for sediment accumulation and reflecting deeper-water deposition with possible anoxia. The Houston trough formed over the former Brazos Basin in the eastern Texas area and affected sedimentation from the Barremian to the Eocene.

CarbonSAFE Project Uses Core Technology to Identify CO₂ Storage Potential

Increasing global concern about climate change and its impact on the environment and society has led to a variety of strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and find places to store it. Many companies are hard at work to perfect methods of carbon capture, use, and storage. Franek Hasiuk, associate scientist at Kansas Geological Survey, said CCUS is the best technology available to reduce emissions produced by the global economy. Hasiuk is part of a team of scientists working on the Integrated Midcontinent Stacked Carbon Storage Hub, a project to investigate subsurface geology in southwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska and demonstrate the viability of injecting CO₂ into underground rock layers.

The Anadarko “Super” Basin: 10 key characteristics to understand its productivity

The Anadarko Super Basin has similarities and differences with the other approximately 50 worldwide super basins. It has numerous giant oil fields, but they are smaller, stacked traps. It has produced 50 BBOE with the potential for another 50 BBOE, especially in unconventional reservoirs.

Seeing Through the Dark Clouds

Like many of my age cohort, I often listen to podcasts on my daily commute to work. One of my favorites is Motley Fool’s “Rule Breakers,” a stock market-oriented podcast by David Gardner. One of the common refrains he uses to describe his stock-selecting philosophy is that he looks for “dark clouds I can see through.” The premise is simple: if a company has been beaten down for a good reason, but you have line of sight on that issue being resolved, there exists an opportunity to acquire at a good value and profit from the recovery. Can we see through the dark clouds that hang over the industry today, to a brighter future?

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, "Basin Modeling of Thermicity and Diachronism of South Atlantic Rifted Margin: An Example from the Presalt of Brazil", on Wednesday, 4 May 2022, 8:00 AM (CST). Rifted margins contain prolific petroleum systems due to their unique crustal evolution, which frequently causes very favorable combinations of source rock deposition, heat flow evolution, and structural/stratigraphic trap configuration. Structural restoration and basin modeling help understand observed geometries and thermal data, suggesting a strong diachronism between heat flow and structuring/faulting. These concepts and their implications are highlighted with an example from the pre-salt basins in offshore Brazil.
