The international competition, involving the world’s leading universities in petroleum geosciences, is hosted annually by AAPG and designed to give students an opportunity to use real technology on datasets, receive feedback from an industry panel, have the opportunity to impress potential employers in the audience and win cash awards for their schools.

Oil and liquids-rich gas deposits are hot targets today among prospectors and operators – and the action in the self-sourced Niobrara shale play in the Rocky Mountain region is about as fired up as it can be.

This month we expand our insights into the behavior of seismic S waves as they propagate through a fractured interval, with the emphasis placed on laboratory data of real S waves propagating through fractured real-Earth media.

Just one year ago drilling in the off-limits eastern Gulf of Mexico appeared to be on the cusp of getting the green light from the U.S. government as calls for “drill, baby, drill” emanated from politicians as well as the ordinary Joe.

When a shear (S) wave propagates through a rock unit that has vertical fractures oriented at a reasonably consistent azimuth, it splits into two S waves that propagate with distinct velocities.

Last year we conducted a few polls on AAPG programs and we realized that many members are not familiar with all of AAPG’s digital programs. For example, AAPG has three primary digital information programs with Datapages – the Archives, Search and Discovery and GIS-UDRIL.

Seismic attributes are particularly effective for extracting subtle geologic features from relatively noise-free seismic data. However, seismic data are usually contaminated by both random and coherent noise, even when the data have been migrated reasonably well and are multiple-free.

The following short course option was developed for geology and geophysics students that have not had much exposure to how geoscience is applied in industry. It can be tailored for undergraduate juniors and seniors or graduate students. The agenda can be modified to meet specific needs and time constraints. Contact the presenter to discuss options.

In comparison with the known boundary conditions that promote salt deformation and flow in sedimentary basins, the processes involved with the mobilization of clay-rich detrital sediments are far less well established. This talk will use seismic examples in different tectonic settings to document the variety of shale geometries that can be formed under brittle and ductile deformations.
