Rio de Janeiro was discovered by in 1502 by Portuguese explorers who mistook the Guanabara Bay for a river (rio). They later founded Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, a city that became wealthy exporting diamonds, gold and sugar.

Rio served as Brazil’s capital until Brasilia was built in the 1960s, and today the city serves as a hub for the country’s energy sector. Brazil’s national oil company Petrobras and several other domestic and international energy companies have their headquarters downtown.

Rio de Janeiro, famous for its coastal mountains and forests and breathtaking views of the Atlantic, is one of the top destinations for world travelers.
