All authors of Memoir chapters are required to get permissions for any previously published figures, graphics, data, etc., contained within their submitted Memoir chapter. A sample permissions template is available at here.

AAPG Owns Copyright on Most of its Publications

AAPG obtains copyright of both print and digital/electronic ownership from most authors of articles and books published by AAPG. If any material requested was reprinted by AAPG with the permission of another publisher, it is the responsibility of those requesting permission to obtain permission from that original publisher.

Open Access

AAPG allows authors to elect Open Access publishing as part of compliance with certain governmental funding initiatives. In such instances use of this material may be covered by a Creative Commons License.

An author’s choice of Open Access publishing in an AAPG Memoir will have no bearing on the manuscript’s status during peer review. The following is intended to comply with UKRC policies on open access and thus make sure our publications are not blacklisted to authors who are obliged to use an open access publication. This policy will be modified from time to time based on review of other funding agency requirements.

AAPG does not charge a page charge fee to authors submitting to AAPG Memoirs but does request voluntary manuscript charges to help defray the cost of publishing in its books. There are also currently no mandatory color charges at this time for books, although authors are encouraged to seek funding for color. Copyright for manuscripts published under this model typically resides with AAPG, although under fair use provisions authors are allowed to post a copy of the final paper on their personal website (not including ResearchGate, University websites, or any other websites of these types).

Open Access Gold Model:

For authors who choose this model of publishing, a minimum Author Publication Charge (APC) of $2,500 will be levied per manuscript. The APC charge may vary based on the article length and the proportion of Open Access manuscripts in the whole book. This fee would be required prior to publication but after peer review and acceptance. The final manuscript will be accessible free to the public via the AAPG Datapages archives and GeoScienceWorld, and will be clearly flagged as Open Access both online and wherever available in print format. Copyright in the manuscript will be covered by Creative Commons Attribution License CC-BY.

Open Access Green Model:

Under the Green Model no Author Publication Charge is required. The manuscript will be published as with the traditional model; however, authors will be allowed to place a post-peer reviewed version of the manuscript in their institutional repository, a subject-based repository, or personal website no earlier than twelve months after publication. This author-posted manuscript cannot be the final version published in the book. Copyright can remain with the author if requested, and the manuscript will then be covered by Creative Commons Attribution License CC-BY or other licenses as required by various funding agencies.

AAPG Authors

Authors wishing to use AAPG copyrighted material within work being published by AAPG are not subject to fees nor do they need to seek permission from AAPG; however, it is the responsibility of authors to provide proper citation. Permission without a fee is granted to AAPG authors who wish to republish portions of their own work as long as AAPG copyright credit is given. For both instances please refer below to “Condition of Grant of Permission.”

Special Fair Use Permission

If you want to use a single figure, a brief paragraph, or a single table from an AAPG publication in a paper in another publication, AAPG considers this to be fair usage, and you need no formal permission. In that case, you should print a copy of this document and present it to your publisher. You are, however, required to provide proper citation.

How to Apply for Permission

Authorization for additional copies of items copyrighted by AAPG in any form, hardcopy, digital/electronic scanning or other digital transformation into computer-readable and/or transmittable form, for personal or corporate use is granted provided the appropriate fee is paid directly to the Copyright Clearance Center, 222 Rosewood Drive, Danvers, Massachusetts 01923 / http://www.copyright.com.
