The Guiana Basin has been described by the US Geological Survey as the as the second most prospective, underexplored offshore oil basin in the world, with an estimated 13.6 billion barrels of oil and 32 trillion cubic feet of natural gas yet to be discovered. It's structurally complex sister basin to the north, the Columbus Basin of Trinidad, which has produced just over 1 billion barrels of oil and 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to date from thick Plio-Pleistocene deltaic sands within the Present Day shelf.
Marginal success has been achieved in Trinidad and Tobago's deep water accretionary prism and toe thrust provinces while multi-billion barrel discoveries are slowly becoming the norm in the Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana passive margins.
AAPG’s hosted its first every GTW in Trinidad and Tobago in March 2014. This workshop, Deep Horizon and Deep Water Frontier Exploration in Latin America, featured technical presentations from many companies poised and on the cusp of embarking on their exploration campaigns.
Three years later, with a mixed bag of successes and failures we converge onto Guyana, the new deep water hotspot of the region to reflect on our original ideas, theories and models and thoroughly evaluate the results of the recent exploration campaigns within the Columbus & Guiana Basins.
GTW Guyana features two days of expert presentations and roundtable discussions focused on the following themes:
The workshop includes poster sessions highlighting the Demerara Plateau and surrounding areas, as well as and tools and technology to optimize exploration and production.
GTW Guyana 2017 will be held at the Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown, a 4-star hotel located at the intersection of the Demerara River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana on the mainland of South America. The city is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Demerara River, in the region known as Demerara-Mahaica. A retail and administrative center, and a financial services center, Georgetown is Guyana's chief seaport.
Founded by the British in 1781 and named for King George III of the United Kingdom, Georgetown long served as the capital of British Guiana. Guyana became independent from Britain in 1966 and a Co-operative Republic in 1970, when a non-executive President replaced the Governor-General.
Guyana is located on the North East Coast of South America and is its only English speaking country. Approximately 75% of the land area is still intact forest, and 2.5% is cultivated. The coastline is 1 metre to 1.5 metres below sea level at high tide necessitating an elaborate system of drainage canals.
The most valuable mineral deposits are bauxite, gold, and diamonds. The main rivers are the Demerara, Berbice, Corentyne and Essequibo.
Guyana’s population is approximately 747,884 (Census 2012) of whom 90% live along the coastal strip and banks of major rivers.
