The fourth day of the 3P Arctic Conference & Exhibition is October 2. Session chairs Timothy Collett and Klaus Wallmann will welcome attendees and introduce session eight speakers, who will be speaking on Geological Occurrence and Implications of Gas Hydrates in the Circum Arctic. Thomas Reichel, Statoil ASA, will be the first speaker to take the platform on Friday.

Abstract: Global Screening of Gas Hydrates – How does the Arctic score?

Gas hydrates have been identified as a possible future hydrocarbon resource, and many industry projects have tried to further understand and advance this frontier concept. This presentation will give an overview of results from a global screening of gas hydrate resources and how the world’s most prospective areas were defined and ranked by Statoil. A conventional exploration risking approach was used to evaluate and risk both offshore and onshore basins for hydrocarbon source, gas migration pathways, reservoir properties and sealing capabilities of the sediments. Special focus will be given on the Arctic region, which can be regarded as one of the “sweet spot” areas worldwide due to its favourable conditions of preserving and trapping gas hydrates. Technological developments, gas price and the continued increase in demand for energy will define if and when these resources can become commercially attractive.
