Helmut Weissert, a professor at Geological Institute, ETH Zürich, Switzerland, was invited in May 2015 by Academician Wang Chengshan of China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and Professor Zhu Xiaomin of China University of Petroleum (Beijing) to present an academic report on deep-sea sediments to teachers and students at China University of Petroleum (Beijing). The report was chaired by Professor Liu Luofu of College of Geosciences, and assisted by AAPG Student Chapter-China University of Petroleum Beijing.

This lecture is an academic activity in 2015 China Station, which is one part of the IAS (International Association of Sedimentologists) Tour and "China Sedimentology Development Strategy" project.

Professor Helmut Weissert stated two major issues in the report. One was the evolution and development of carbonate compensation depth (CCD) in the geological history and how to analyze it with the wells’ data. This part compared the CCD of the deepest Atlantic Ocean with that of the shallowest in the Pacific, and explained this matter with a structural section. The other was the meaning of oceanic anoxic event as well as the links with the environment and the greenhouse effect. Teachers and students present listened attentively to Professor Helmut Weissert’s report, and had an active interaction with Professor on the problems of CCD and OAE in a harmonious atmosphere.

Professor Helmut Weissert gained praise for making a wonderful report in a humorous and approachable teaching way.
