The proposal to eliminate sponsors for membership will remove any impediment to a speedy application process by which qualified candidates for membership in our fine organization may be welcomed. I believe this will be good for the AAPG and good for the DPA.

At first glance, the 47-year-old, unassuming Colombian may not seem like one of the senior leaders of a national oil company. But spending five minutes with Ramirez explains why this passionate individual is one of Colombia’s industry leaders who is leaving a lasting legacy for AAPG.

I am honored to be nominated as a candidate for secretary/editor of the AAPG House of Delegates. The HoD plays a very important role in determining the direction of the AAPG, both in seeking out and vetting potential AAPG members, and in discussing and ultimately deciding the future of the organization through changing the Bylaws. As Secretary of the House of Delegates, I will strive to do the best job possible in keeping accurate records of the important work of the House.

Much of my career has been in Wyoming, and I have represented the Wyoming Geological Association, having also served as WGA president. About two years ago I finished a term as president of the Rocky Mountain Section, culminating in leading an RMS meeting in Cheyenne, Wyo. in 2011, as the Niobrara play was starting to heat up.

In that I split my time between the United States and Asia, and that I teach classes globally, I believe I can bring a unique perspective to the position of chair-elect, and then chair. I understand from first-hand experience the rewards and challenges of the U.S. Sections, and also the international Regions. Although occasionally, the interests and needs of the U.S. Sections and international Regions conflict, all of us want to see the AAPG become the world’s premier scientific association. If elected, I can leverage my role as a globe-trotting bon vivant to promote that vision and help it become a reality.

I would like to express my appreciation to the Nomination and Election Committee for asking me to run for chair-elect of the House of Delegates this year. I consider it an honor to be nominated. AAPG has made significant contributions to my professional growth in the oil and gas industry, and has fostered my passion for the science of geology during my career. I believe the main reason that AAPG continues to inspire me is the House of Delegates keeps the organization relevant by providing ongoing dynamic feedback and leadership from our membership. I cannot imagine AAPG without the HoD, and if elected I will work diligently to ensure that the House continues to function as an integral part of AAPG.
