Historically, the exploration for oil and gas resources has focused on identifying structural and stratigraphic trams associated with conventional accumulations. This special issue aims at introducing a new exploration paradigm through case studies in the United States and Canada.

The offshore Mancos play is interpreted as a carrier bed play within the Mancos total petroleum system. Oils generated in downdip mature source rocks migrated updip through the carrier bed sandstones of the offshore play and into conventional reservoirs.

A play from western Canada and one from New Mexico produce from carrier beds that serve as migration pathways for oil in conventional reservoirs. Carrier beds typically have lower porosity and permeability associated with facies changes. Lower permeability, however, is no longer a barrier to production.

Several breweries around the world are harnessing geothermal steam power to create signature craft beers – and some even reference geothermal energy or hot spring’s mineral content in their brews’ names. These venues use geothermal steam to boil the water needed during the brewing process, and some then return the vapor back to the Earth, creating a sustainable circuit. Let’s look at three examples of where energy innovation meets craft beer.

Peak oil demand used to be projected many years or decades into the future, igniting little urgency in the minds of investors and the public; however, new reports forecast this event much sooner. Released in July, BP’s Energy Outlook 2024 projects peak oil demand between 2025 and 2030, but is this true? Do other companies and agencies agree with this assessment?

The type of cell/panel you envision when you hear/read the word “solar” or “photovoltaic” is likely rather large and made from silicon. Most of us can recall from our “Rocks for Jocks” (Geology 101) class that silicon is extremely abundant in Earth’s crust. Add one tally to the “pro” column for silicon solar. But undergrad geology probably didn’t focus on the most important part of silicon as it relates to solar, and that is its semi-conductive properties.

Abstracts from more than 50 papers addressing the geology of the area from the southern onshore of North America to the northern onshore of South America, including the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas Platform, Yucatán, Caribbean (Colombia, Venezuela), Grenada and Tobago basins and adjacent Atlantic. Integration will improve understanding and promote investigation of lesser-explored/debated areas, such as the Caribbean. Recent seismic and drilling discoveries from other offshore frontiers will help assessment of their hydrocarbon potential.
