The summer of 2017 is the summer for AAPG and the Visiting Geoscientist Program! Each Tuesday and Thursday, beginning 6 June, join Visiting Geoscientist Fred Schroeder for a one-hour live webinar. The series follows a two-semester course designed and developed by Schroeder to instruct students on the basics of geology and geophysics in the petroleum industry.

Apply for research funding from the AAPG Foundation. The purpose of the AAPG Foundation Grants-in-Aid program is to foster research in the geosciences. Grants are made to provide financial assistance to graduate students (currently enrolled in Masters or Ph.D. programs) whose thesis research has application to the search for and development of petroleum and energy-mineral resources, and/or to related environmental geology issues.

The House Natural Resources Committee recently held a hearing to discuss energy development in the Mancos shale formation of the Piceance basin, which is a geographic area that spans Colorado and Utah and much of the resource is located on federal lands. The purpose of the hearing was to highlight the release of a recent U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment which found that the Mancos shale has a large volume of recoverable energy resources.

EMD is sponsoring a special forum with DEG titled: "The Next 100 Years of Global Energy Use: Resources, Impacts and Economics", as part of the AAPG Annual Meeting in Houston. The forum will be held on April 4, from 1:15 to 5:05 pm at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This special AAPG 100th Anniversary event is open to the public free of charge. The invited speakers are world renowned experts with diverse backgrounds that will provide a critical review and assessment of global energy use during the next century.

The AAPG Petroleum Structure and Geomechanics Division (PSGD) has announced the 2016 Best Paper Awards at the Annual Convention and Exhibition in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Congratulations to William L. Ellsworth, awarded "Best Recent Publication" for "Injection-induced earthquakes, Science, v. 341, DOI: 10.1126/science.1225942".

We thank everyone for nominating the candidates. We also thank Bob Krantz, Bob Hatcher, and Gary Couples for their diligent work on the PSGD Best Paper Committee.
