Description of Award
The gold plated medal features a bas-relief likeness of Michel T. Halbouty and the name of the Association on the obverse side. On the reverse side are inscribed the words, “Awarded for Outstanding Leadership to the Petroleum Geosciences,” along with the name of the recipient. The medal is mounted in multi-sided acrylic and is presented along with an embossed Certificate and lapel pin tack. Honorary membership is automatically bestowed upon recipients of the Award, if they have not already received that honor.
This medal award was made a part of AAPG’s honors by Executive Committee action in 1972. Initially it was a 5-inch solid brass medal mounted on a marble base. It was changed to a plaque-mounted medal award in 1984. Funding for the award is provided by a Foundation fund established by Michel T. Halbouty. In 1988 the name of the award was changed from the Human Needs Award to the Michel T. Halbouty Human Needs Award. In 2005 the name of the award was changed from the Michel T. Halbouty Human Needs Award to the Michel T. Halbouty Memorial Human Needs Award. The award name was changed to the Michel T. Halbouty Outstanding Leadership Award and amended by Executive Committee action in 2006.
