It’s been a tough 18 months if you are in the energy industry. Of the five times I can recall this happening in my career, this downturn has a few extra twists that make this time different.

The AAPG Bulletin is the flagship publication of the AAPG and is a publication we can all be justifiably proud of. How many of you realize that the AAPG publishes a second scientific bulletin that is just as technically excellent with a long history of publishing cutting-edge research? I am talking about the DEG’s Environmental Geosciences (EG), which has been in publication for over 20 years.

Our seismic industry has witnessed many revolutions, starting from refraction to reflection imaging (1919), analog to digital recording (1963), the introduction of the common depth point (CDP) technique (1952) and the transition from 2-D to 3-D P-wave seismic data in the 1980s.

Only a short time ago, many in the oil and gas industry were concerned about the potential shortage of workers needed for a growing industry and a wave of retirements. Obviously, the demand has since dropped. However, we know it will go up again, and when it does, concerns about having technically qualified workers will return.
