Meet David Cook, 2017 Candidate for AAPG Vice President-Regions

I thank you for the honour of your nomination as candidate for the position of VP-Regions. Service to the geoscience community has been an important personal goal following my retirement from full-time employment. I have devoted the past ten years to nearly full-time volunteer work for AAPG, which has provided me a deep understanding of its programs. I accepted the invitation to be a candidate for VP-Regions because I believe that AAPG is the premier petroleum geoscience society and because I feel that I can make a contribution to the Executive Committee and the Association, especially during this time of economic uncertainty.

The AAPG, like the industry as a whole, has changed significantly over the last two years, and further change may be necessary to compete effectively and efficiently in the current environment. To increase our efficiency, I am particularly interested in standardising best practices in the Regions and working with the VP-Sections to promote best practices across the Sections and Regions.

It is important to make sure that the AAPG continues to be relevant to the Regions by providing products and services that are topical and of value to the membership.

Another important issue facing the AAPG is the recruitment and retention of members. Reducing the barriers to transition from Student to Young Professional to Member will be a vital part of solving this problem.

If elected, I look forward to being part of the team that will manage the course that the AAPG will take over the next two years.
