Last year at about this time, I looked back and hoped we would be going through an oil price shock similar to 2008; instead it has become apparent that we are facing something different and much more akin to the 1980s.

Traditionally, “community” referred to where you lived: It was a term that implied geography. Now the word “community” has taken on additional meaning: Common culture, common history and shared heritage. AAPG, as an organization, is dedicated to science and community.

On Sept. 30, AAPG Executive Director David Curtiss and 10 AAPG members participated in a day of visits to Capitol Hill to discuss the importance of strong federal investments for geoscience research and education. Geosciences Congressional Visits Day (GEO-CVD) is organized by AAPG in conjunction with other geoscience organizations.

The often-volatile outcome of exploration investment decisions is tightly linked to the level of uncertainty in the geological interpretation and associated value assessment. In order to evaluate subsurface opportunities, information is needed.

Natural gas hydrate (NGH), a crystalline compound of water and natural gas, has been recognized as a vast potential energy resource for over two decades, but its commerciality has persistently remained beyond the horizon due to technical and economic hurdles.

This issue of EXPLORER has focused on exploration innovation. Our stories covered new technologies that help you better find oil and natural gas, and we discussed new ways of thinking, looking for new approaches to age-old problems. I’d like to close this month spending a few moments talking about personal reinvention – a type of innovation that each of us should be engaged in during these tumultuous times in our industry.

When I ask our members why they joined our Association, most say they joined for the science. Members rarely, if ever, say they joined for our conventions… In fact, the department that generates the majority of revenue yearly for AAPG is our convention department – from our annual and international meetings. So how is our yearly revenue generated?

Everyone in Houston lives within a few miles of a bayou. Some people think of them as permanent, but the bayous are constantly changing, especially during high water events like Hurricane Harvey. This trip is a 2.5 mile walk down a section of Buffalo Bayou where we will look at the archives of past storms and discuss what to do for future storms.

DL Abstract

Climate change is not only happening in the atmosphere but also in the anthroposphere; in some ways the former could drive or exacerbate the latter, with extreme weather excursions and extreme excursions from societal norms occurring all over the earth. Accomplishing geoscience for a common goal – whether that is for successful business activities, resource assessment for public planning, mitigating the impacts of geological hazards, or for the sheer love of furthering knowledge and understanding – can and should be done by a workforce that is equitably developed and supported. Difficulty arises when the value of institutional programs to increase equity and diversity is not realized.

DL Abstract

The Energy sector is a changing business environment. Throughout the 20th century fluctuations of oil supply and demand produced changes in the barrel price that pushed the growth or shrinkage of the industry. In this 21st century, new challenges such as diversification of the energy mix, boosting gas demand, require the exploration of critical minerals and development of new technologies as well.
