The newly-formed AAPG Malaysian Special Interest Group held their first gathering and welcomed Dr Mazlan Madon, the custodian, author and well known authority on the Malaysian Continental Shelf. Mazlan is a recognized figure for both his experience and also his publications, with the “Petroleum Geology and Resources of Malaysia” still a key reference for petroleum geologists.

I was recently asked what motivates me to volunteer for the AAPG. At first, I thought of the many benefits the AAPG has to offer. Is it the access to renowned literature and technical resources? Perhaps. Is it the chance to network and grow in a community of like-minded individuals? Definitely a deciding factor. But the more I thought about it, I realized I volunteer to make an impact.

I received my 40-year certificate from AAPG. At the bottom it reads, “In Recognition and Appreciation of your Loyalty to AAPG,” but it is I who should be thanking AAPG for allowing me to be part of this great organization. AAPG allowed me to network and make contacts with smarter people than me and to learn and expand my knowledge base. This is a great profession, and I have found a career in the geological sciences to be extremely rewarding.
