Call it unprecedented, call it exciting and unpredictable, call it historic – and you’re right each time. Indeed, this year’s competition had many firsts – a global pandemic, an entirely virtual competition and the introduction of the IBA Exploration Leadership Series.

The Imperial Barrel Award program has been associated with the AAPG and coordinated by a volunteer committee of AAPG members since 2007. With the objective of introducing geoscience students in graduate school to real world data and workflows in the oil and gas industry, the core of the annual IBA competition is the people – all volunteers, industry leaders and subject-matter experts willingly taking time to judge and coordinate competitions as well as network with the hard-working, eager and promising future industry leaders. The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent crash of crude oil prices presented the IBA Committee with unique challenges for continuing with the 2020 IBA competition while ensuring the safety of all participating teams and volunteers.

In a room of more than 150 geoscientists gathered to support scholarship recipients of the Houston Geological Society, the question was asked: “How many of you secretly want to be an astronaut?” Dozens of hands shot up. Yes, it is cool to study rocks on Earth, but with exploration in the DNA of scientists, the rocks on the moon and on Mars inevitably beckon. In a keynote address to recipients of $50,000 in scholarships from the HGS Scholarship Committee chaired by past AAPG President Charles Sternbach, Jessica Watkins – a newly graduated astronaut from NASA and planetary geologist – made the possibility of space exploration a little less out of reach for budding geoscientists.

The Sidney Powers Memorial Award is, among everything else it represents, AAPG’s lifetime achievement award. But, more than the Association simply recognizing outstanding individuals who have contributed to the advancement of petroleum geology, the Powers medal also puts a marker by these award winners and says to future generations, “These people right here. They’re who we as geologists are and strive to be.” These winners are links between generations, even the generations not yet here. This year’s recipient of AAPG’s highest honor, past AAPG President Paul Weimer, deserves his place on that chain for his extensive research and teaching activities in global deepwater plays, and for his public outreach activities, but also for his humility.
