Structural Styles in the Middle East - Workshop Review

AAPG "Structural Styles in the Middle East" GTW took place from 9-11 May 2017 at the Al Bandar Hotel, Shangri La Resort, Muscat, Oman.

The workshop aimed at providing a state of the art review of the contrasted structural styles of the Middle East. 68 industry professionals from 11 countries and 25 companies attended the workshop. The 23 presentations which formed the technical program covered the following topics:

  • Regional Comparison between the Structural Styles of the Arabian Peninsula and Iranian Zagros and Makran Provinces
  • Role of Deeply-Rooted Structures Compared to Detachment-Related Structures
  • Comparison between North, South and South-East Oman
  • Kinematics Indicators of Alpine I and II Tectonic Phases across the Middle East
  • Overview of the Key Structural Tools for Seismic Interpretation and Structural Model QC

Highlights of the workshop included:

  • Welcome remarks by Salim Mahruqi, AAPG Middle East President Elect, PDO
  • Inaugural keynote address by Intisaar Al Kindy, Director of Exploration, PDO
  • Technical keynote speech by Mohammed Ameen, Saudi Aramco

All of the attendees also benefitted from informative breakout discussions, held after each of session.

An optional half day field trip took place on the afternoon of the 10th May. The field trip included a visit to Wadi Yiti to observe the large scale sheeth folds and low-angle detachment zones, along with a stop to see the hot water springs at the contact between the ophiolite and the shelf carbonates of Saih Hatat. Mohammed Al Kindi from the Geological Society of Oman (GSO) lead the field trip.
