The Upper Jurassic to Eocene carbonate rocks of the Gargano Promontory belong to the Apulia Carbonate Platform (ACP) and provide a spectacular and complete succession of slope and base-of-slope resedimented gravity flow carbonates with preserved reservoir properties and, with its coeval carbonate platform, displaying various tectonostratigraphic architectures.

Stratal geometry and lithofacies architecture from carbonate outcrops provide critical information for subsurface prediction of rock types, their spatial distribution, and reservoir quality. Such observations guide and support exploration, appraisal, development, and production strategies.

The Danian carbonates exposed in the Urbasa–Andia plateau (western Pyrenees, North Spain) provide the opportunity to examine at different scales the facies types and architecture of a greenhouse ramp to rimmed shelf from the slope to coralgal reefal margin through to the highly restricted evaporitic inner shelf areas, integrated with a range of porosity-forming, early diagenetic phases associated with third-order highstands and lowstands.

The fault-related folds observed in the south Pyrenean fold and thrust belt are hybrid structures with elements of detachment folding as well as elements of fault bend and fault propagation folding.

The type section of the Oligocene to lower Miocene Maikop Group, considered the main source rock in the eastern Paratethys, has been studied using geochemical proxies to gain insights into depositional setting and hydrocarbon potential. The Maikop Group at the type section is approximately 600 m (2000 ft) thick.
