Geologists will soon have a set of software tools that can automatically correlate hundreds of stratigraphic tops that will encompass thousands of well logs. The new approach – a software Python package, ChronoLog – will potentially change how such compilations are done.

Robert Stern, a professor of geosciences at the University of Texas at Dallas, thinks he and a group of fellow scientists have solved one important part of the mystery. Stern. “We know oil is limited by the nutrients. Oil just doesn’t suddenly appear,” he said. That raises the question, “How did all those nutrients get there?”

Facies variability within a mixed carbonate–siliciclastic sea-floor fan (upper Wolfcamp Formation, Permian, Delaware Basin, New Mexico)

Sea-floor fans containing both carbonate and siliciclastic detritus are rarely recognized in the rock record but are common within the Permian upper Wolfcamp Formation in the Delaware Basin in southeast New Mexico and west Texas. One such compositionally mixed fan has been studied in detail as part of an unconventional oil and gas exploration and development program in southeast New Mexico.

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, "Using Geochemistry to Understand Production GOR in Unconventional Reservoirs", on Wednesday, 8 June 2022, 8:00 AM (CST). A common question in appraisal or development of either conventional or unconventional reservoirs is understanding the control on production yield (stb/mmscf) or GOR (stb/scf). Fluid and/or rock-based geochemistry is a useful tool in conjunction with engineering principles to understand what the primary mechanism(s) are controlling production yield. Here we will look at the use of geochemistry to access yield for tight reservoirs.

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, "Basin Modeling of Thermicity and Diachronism of South Atlantic Rifted Margin: An Example from the Presalt of Brazil", on Wednesday, 4 May 2022, 8:00 AM (CST). Rifted margins contain prolific petroleum systems due to their unique crustal evolution, which frequently causes very favorable combinations of source rock deposition, heat flow evolution, and structural/stratigraphic trap configuration. Structural restoration and basin modeling help understand observed geometries and thermal data, suggesting a strong diachronism between heat flow and structuring/faulting. These concepts and their implications are highlighted with an example from the pre-salt basins in offshore Brazil.
