The Exploration Conundrum

Oil companies made huge cuts in their exploration budgets during the 2015-17 industry downturn, canceling or postponing up to $1 trillion overall in scheduled and planned projects. At the same time, success rates for international exploration dropped to 50-year lows. The outlook for future reserves has stumbled, if not tumbled.

Shortwave infrared (1.0–2.5 μm) hyperspectral imaging of the Athabasca West Grand Rapids Formation oil sands

Previous work on the reflectance spectroscopy of oil sands has focused exclusively on the McMurray Formation of the Athabasca deposit. However, as industrial development expands into other formations, spectral research on Alberta’s other bitumen reservoirs is warranted.

Coherence is an iconic attribute that finds its place in most workstation interpretation software packages. Much has been written about this attribute and the usefulness of its applications. The geologic feature imaging in three-dimensional seismic data volumes is done well by the coherence attribute as three-dimensionality is an essential ingredient of its computation.

Geologic and resource assessment of the Upper Devonian Grosmont and upper Ireton Formations, central Grosmont shelf complex, Alberta, Canada

The Devonian Grosmont and upper Ireton (GUI) Formations of northeastern Alberta contain between 300-574 billion barrels of in-situ bitumen. The GUI stratal succession shallows upward and is partitioned into five progradational, shallow marine sequences.

Analysis of high-resolution 3-D seismic data from the Cold Lake Production Project (CLPP) of central Alberta, Canada, has resulted a new sequence stratigraphic interpretation and depositional model for the upper Albian, Clearwater Formation (Fm.) of the Mannville Group (Gp.).
