During the 1980s, early prospecting in deepwater margins was the simple extension of prolific updip producing basins that were charged. However, the migration of petroleum exploration and development into deepwater was fraught with challenges. For engineers and geologists, one of our biggest challenges was to overcome our collective lack of understanding about the geology of deepwater. We had to revisit everything we thought we knew, one paradigm shift after another.

Provenance of Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous synrift strata in the Terra Nova oil field, Jeanne d’Arc basin, offshore Newfoundland: A new detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf reference frame for the Atlantic Canadian margin

Detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf results from the Jeanne d’Arc Formation, Newfoundland, provide new constraints on synrift sandstone deposition in the Jeanne d’Arc basin. These results are consistent with the existence of Jurassic and Cretaceous rift-related units in the southwestern Grand Banks.

Shale Capacity for Predicting Well Performance Variability

The goal of reservoir characterization work carried out for a shale play is to enhance hydrocarbon production by identifying the favorable drilling targets. The drilling operators have the perception that in organic-rich shale formations, horizontal wells can be drilled anywhere, in any direction, and hydraulic fracturing at regular intervals along the length of the laterals can then lead to better production. Given that this understanding holds true, all fracturing stages are expected to contribute impartially to the production. However, studies have shown that only 50 percent of the fracturing stages contribute to overall production. This suggests that repetitive drilling of wells and their completions without attention to their placement must be avoided, and smart drilling needs to be followed by operators.

Geologists get the basics right, in general, but sometimes they might be thinking about source rock the wrong way. They are definitely talking about it in the wrong way.
