World Helium Resources to Enter 'Sustained, Ample Supply'

Helium rose back into the news recently, in part because of drilling exploration programs planned for an area along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border in southern Canada. North American Helium Inc. of Calgary announced it had arranged additional equity financing of about $29 million to purchase and construct its second helium purification plant at the Battle Creek field in southwest Saskatchewan and to fund an active drilling program. A number of other companies are reportedly involved in North American helium exploration projects, including Desert Mountain Energy Corp. and Royal Helium Ltd. of Vancouver, Weil Group Resources LLC in Richmond, Va., and Australian explorer Blue Star Energy.

Publication Pipeline Committee Expands Its Global Outreach

For almost two decades, the AAPG Publication Pipeline Committee has helped preserve and spread educational materials to all corners of the globe. The effort began at the University of Houston when a visiting professor from Nigeria mentioned that universities in Africa were in dire need of technical journals and publications. Since then, the PPC has made 67 shipments – 215 tons – of publications to more than 80 universities around the world.

3-D Seismic Volume Visualization in Color: Part 2

Seismic attributes help enhance the subtle subsurface geologic detail that might be difficult and time consuming to decipher from 3-D seismic amplitude data. Beginning with the simple computation of envelope, phase and frequency attributes in the 1970s, several dozen seismic attributes are generated these days containing disparate types of information. To bring together all this information and produce an accurate subsurface model, the multiple attributes need to be carefully visualized and displayed, and thus has become an important interpretation tool for seismic interpreters.

Mixed siliciclastic–carbonate systems and their impact for the development of deep-water turbidites in continental margins: A case study from the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous Shelburne subbasin in offshore Nova Scotia

Progradation of deltaic systems that reach the shelf edge is considered a primary mechanism to deliver sand to continental margins. Sediment bypass processes can dominate the outer shelf to upper slope transition, causing poor preservation of reservoir quality sandstones. Turbidites can carry the bulk of the coarse fraction downdip where a thicker sand pile can be deposited once the channel-to-lobe transition is reached.

Big Oil Moves Toward Big Shale

Some of the world’s largest oil companies have pumped up their shale investments recently, targeting increased future production from shale oil plays. At the same time, some independents have been cutting back on shale spending, in part because of lower oil and gas prices and shareholder demands for improved returns. The result is a not-so-subtle shift toward shale dominance by Big Oil.

Impact of Velocity Field on AVA Analysis

Amplitude variation with offset or angle has been widely used for discriminating hydrocarbons from brine-saturated rocks. Such analyses are based on Zoeppritz equations that describe the partitioning of energy at a rock interface into reflected and refracted energy components. These equations are complicated and, to get an intuitive understanding of their capabilities and limitations, various investigators and researchers have provided approximations by adopting some simplifying assumptions.
