For the first time in the Middle East region, AAPG is hosting a Geosciences Technology Workshop (GTW) dedicated to the Shuaiba Formation. This exciting and innovative event will take place at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa on 6–7 April 2020 and will feature a compelling lineup of technical speakers and poster presenters.

Many companies are taking a pro-active stance toward new technology and have assembled teams to scout and implement new techniques and technologies in their operations. Please meet Mike Party, part of the Emerging Technology Team at Hess. Mike speaks to us today about the quest for the breakthrough technologies. Mike will be presenting at AAPG's Success with Difficult Unconventionals, Nov 12-13, in Houston.

New processes and technologies are coaxing oil and gas from difficult unconventionals and re-establishing flow and improving the oil cut in the produced fluids in mature fields. One of the most effective approaches involves wettability alteration. Welcome to an interview with Salem Thyne, E-Sal, who speaks with us here and will be at AAPG's Success with Difficult Unconventionals in Houston, Nov 12-13.

The Unconventional Resources Technology Conference was held this year in Denver, Colo., and once again, it did not disappoint. It was packed with technical presentations and exhibits and it continued to push boundaries and remain as the premier industry event focused on the latest science and technology in exploration and development of unconventional resources.

I received my 40-year certificate from AAPG. At the bottom it reads, “In Recognition and Appreciation of your Loyalty to AAPG,” but it is I who should be thanking AAPG for allowing me to be part of this great organization. AAPG allowed me to network and make contacts with smarter people than me and to learn and expand my knowledge base. This is a great profession, and I have found a career in the geological sciences to be extremely rewarding.

Buckminster Fuller, the American designer, inventor and visionary said, “We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.” In the Energy Minerals Division of the AAPG, we hear that calling and embrace it. In our 2019-20 fiscal year, we welcome the return of longtime leaders as well as an influx of new ones to our design team.

Producers are feeling the pinch: they’ve got to drill ever more wells to stay ahead of their production declines. Increased production is weighing on crude oil prices – you get the benefit of this supply in resilient markets, but it is shrinking margins and available cashflow to fund this drilling. And at the same time, the financial community is pulling back, restricting access to capital. The industry is reshaping itself yet again in response to new market realities, looking for new ideas and better approaches and operating models.

I am super-thrilled to be starting a two-year term as AAPG Europe Region president. The AAPG is a global force for good in our industry, and frankly, after 35 years exploring for oil and gas around the world, I needed to stop taking AAPG for granted. There’s a lot to be done, but we have a great team and are looking forward to some cracking events and activities this year.

As women continue to make inroads and contributions to the once male-dominated oil industry, the West Texas Geology Foundation has taken a new step to encourage more women to enter the field. The foundation established and awarded its first Women in Geoscience Studies scholarship to Alondra Soltero, a graduate student at the University of Texas at El Paso. The Women in Geoscience Studies, or “WinGS” scholarship, established in 2018, is a minimum of $5,000 given to a female candidate studying in a geoscience field from a school in or around the Permian Basin.

For implementation, there remains a sometimes difficult phase of negotiation that is an essential part of the “Art of Exploration.” The following real life cases give a frontal view of the action of this particular stage of the exploration process.

Thursday, 6 June Friday, 7 June 2024, 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

For the first time, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and Geothermal Rising are bringing together geothermal, critical minerals and gases to explore the connections between them, either in the formation of the reservoirs or reserves, or in exploring for, evaluating, and producing them.  Specifically, the conference will bring together geothermal, lithium, geologic hydrogen, helium, iodine, and more in the form of technical presentations, probing panel discussions, poster sessions, and more.

DL Abstract

Why H₂ is generated in subsurface? Which are the reactions and the promising geological setting? Example in countries where H₂ have already been found: Australia, Brazil. Kinetic reactions: i.e., Is the natural H₂ renewable? What we don't know yet about this resource and about the H₂ systems (generation/transport/accumulation). Overview of the current landscape (subsurface law, permitting, E&P activity)
