In the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving on Nov. 23. No matter where you are in the world, it is always good to give thanks. I am thankful to organizers of this year’s highly successful International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) in London and I am personally thankful for a profession that allows each of us to work in teams to solve challenging problems while we create energy abundance, prosperity and a better way of life for the world.

This study evaluates the proportion, length, and effective properties of thin (0.003–0.7 m [0.01–2.3 ft]) shale beds and drapes in tidally influenced channels within a compound valley fill with a focus on estimating geologically based effective rock properties. The Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone is an outcrop analog for fluvial–tidal systems with primary reservoirs being deposited as tidally influenced valley filling point bars.
