Geologically Constrained Electrofacies Classification of Fluvial Deposits: An Example from the Cretaceous Mesaverde Group, Uinta and Piceance Basins

Statistical classification methods consisting of the k-nearest neighbor algorithm (k-NN), a probabilistic clustering procedure (PCP), and a novel method which incorporates outcrop-based thickness criteria through the use of well-log-indicator flags are evaluated for their ability to distinguish fluvial architectural elements of the upper Mesaverde Group of the Piceance and Uinta basins as distinct electrofacies classes.

Pervasive deformation band arrays delay water breakthrough and enhance sweep when the contrast of permeability between them and the host rock is at least of three orders of magnitude, resulting in larger final produced volumes and higher total recovery.

Evidence for a petroleum subsystem in the Frontier Formation of the Uinta–Piceance Basin petroleum province

Carbonates of the Frontier Formation, Uinta Basin, contain certain physical, petrographic, and isotopic characteristics best explained by the presence of sea-floor methane seeps. These seeps record episodes of hydrocarbon generation and demonstrate a potentially viable petroleum system.
