The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale has been a tantalizing target for many years. It's an important source rock, but it has been difficult to successfully complete and produce. Now there is new hope as researchers and their work is receiving support. Welcome to an interview with Mehdi Mokhtari at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. His Tuscaloosa Marine Shale consortium has recently received support from the United States Department of Energy to explore new technologies for economically drilling and completing the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale.

Michael Forrest: A Career of Bright Spots

Michael C. Forrest has been in the industry for more than five decades, first with Shell and then with Maxus, so one could start at any number of points in discussing his impact on geology. Perhaps the best place, though, is the eight-year period that began in 1967 when, at Shell, Forrest recognized the relationship between seismic amplitudes and the presence of hydrocarbons.

Compaction disequilibrium is a widely accepted cause of overpressure, especially in clay-rich, rapidly deposited sediments. Clay diagenesis has been associated with the occurrence of overpressure greater than the compaction disequilibrium overpressure.

Documentation and characterization of the Lower Cretaceous (Valanginian) Calvin and Winn carbonate shelves and shelf margins, onshore northcentral Gulf of Mexico

The Lower Cretaceous stratigraphic section in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) comprises several well-documented carbonate systems that have prominent shelf-margin buildups, including the Berriasian Knowles Limestone ramp and shelf system, Barremian Sligo Formation shelf system, Aptian Pearsall Formation ramp system, and Albian Glen Rose, Edwards, and Stuart City Formations shelf systems.
