The Cretaceous hosts the highest hydrocarbon potential among all geological stratigraphic sequences worldwide, and the Lower Cretaceous in coastal southeastern China, with the development of black mudstones and shales, has potential for hydrocarbon generation.

Simple dip areas of continental sedimentary basins feature stratal overlap, gentle changes in slope, uniform dip angles, and minimal fault development. Locating hydrocarbon traps in these environments therefore presents a difficult challenge. 

Many hydrocarbon shows have been reported from potential evaporite-related carbonate reservoirs in the lower to middle Cambrian units in the Tarim Basin. Petrography, facies, and geochemical analyses from outcrop and core samples were integrated to document the effect of diagenetic evolution on these evaporite-related carbonate reservoirs.

To reveal the resource potential of low-rank coalbed methane (LRCBM) and determine the favorable area from six different zones in the southern Junggar Basin in China, a new LRCBM assessment methodology was developed. This methodology comprises three steps: developing the regional accumulation model, determining the zone with gas-bearing features, and exploring for the favorable targets.

Fan delta conglomerate reservoirs in the Permian Jiamuhe Formation in the Zhongguai area at the northwestern margin of the Junggar basin, northwestern China, are reservoirs for large accumulations of natural tight gas. The tight conglomerates and sandstones are mainly litharenites with a large amount of texturally and compositionally immature volcanic clastic materials.
