A study of the gas–water characteristics and their implications for the coalbed methane accumulation modes in the Southern Junggar Basin, China

The objective of this study in the southern Junggar Basin, China, was to understand coalbed methane genesis, investigate abnormal CO2 accumulation, study the development of microbial communities, and identify the source of coalbed water as well as the timing of methanogenesis.

The History of Deepwater Exploration, Part 2

During the 1980s, early prospecting in deepwater margins was the simple extension of prolific updip producing basins that were charged. However, the migration of petroleum exploration and development into deepwater was fraught with challenges. For engineers and geologists, one of our biggest challenges was to overcome our collective lack of understanding about the geology of deepwater. We had to revisit everything we thought we knew, one paradigm shift after another.

A Geoscientist-Guided Multiattribute SOM Analysis

“Machine learning” has become a common phrase in geophysics. These methods, based on complex algorithms and statistics, allow geoscientists to speed up and improve their interpretations. However, as interpreters, we can feel intimidated and concerned about how much of our expertise can be replaced by machine learning algorithms. To better understand the limitations, we assess the importance of human validation and participation in one machine learning process, highlighting the upsides and downsides of a machine-derived process versus a geoscientist-guided selection of attributes. As Earth scientists, we explored a suite of seismic attributes and selected those that were meaningful for interpreting a deepwater channel system and compared our results with the attributes derived from principal component analysis.

Do super basins have a role in sustainable development? The short answer is, Yes. Super basins can be part of a sustainable energy and environmental future for the planet. A more complex answer is: It depends on how you define “sustainable.” In the view of the oil and gas industry, sustainability has an economic component and an environmental component. Hydrocarbon-based energy is essential for a sustainable world economy in that view, and it will be for a long time to come.

Diagenetic alteration, pore-throat network, and reservoir quality of tight gas sandstone reservoirs: A case study of the upper Paleozoic sequence in the northern Tianhuan depression in the Ordos Basin, China

The complex diagenetic alteration history and its effects on the pore-throat network and reservoir quality of the tight gas sandstones are discussed in this paper. The most important diagenetic factors for porosity reduction were compaction and cementation. This study can predict the development of pore throat systems.

Insight into pore-throat size distribution and the controls on oil saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs using nuclear magnetic resonance parameters: A case study of the Lower Cretaceous Quantou Formation in the southern Songliao Basin, China

Pore type and pore-throat size are the major controlling factors for reservoir oil saturation in tight sandstones in the Quantou Formation, Songliao Basin, China. Pore-throat size distributions had wider ranges in the oil rich layers than in the samples lacking oil emplacement.

Calcite vein system and its importance in tracing paleowater flow and hydrocarbon migration in the Ordovician carbonates of the Tazhong area, Tarim Basin, China

Three phases of calcite vein formation and two fluid flow events controlled by strike-slip faults occurred in the Tazhong area of the Tarim Basin. The timing of fault opening, hydrocarbon migration, and paleowater flow can be constrained based on hydrocarbon-bearing fluid inclusions in calcites.

Comparison of diagenetic characteristics and pore evolution in outcrops and cores of tight sandstone reservoirs in the Triassic Yanchang Formation, the Ordos Basin, China

Reservoir characteristics of the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, northwestern China, are used to identify diagenetic trends and processes responsible for improving reservoir quality and to develop a model for identifying reservoir sweet spots in tight sandstone formations.
