Resource potential and core area prediction of lacustrine tight oil: The Triassic Yanchang Formation in Ordos Basin, China

Unlike liquid-rich hydrocarbons in marine shale systems in North America, the Triassic Yanchang oil is preserved in tight sandstone reservoirs deposited in a lacustrine setting.

When this year’s Michel T. Halbouty Outstanding Leadership Award winner Bernard Christian Duval was younger, he dreamed of becoming a pilot – preferably a fighter pilot, but then discovered he was colorblind; thus, he had to give up his first love. His second love worked out all right, though. Duval, who started his career in 1968 and spent most of it at Total, discovered geology during a summer internship in Morocco, and while he soon realized that geologists, too, need to see color, he discovered there are ways to compensate, to adjust, to find other ways around the obstacles – an adaptation that has served him well throughout his career.

How marine incursion influences the quality of lacustrine source rocks: The Paleogene Nanxiang Basin, eastern China

The impact of marine incursions during transgression (i.e., sea level rises and the shoreline moves landward) on the formation and quality of lacustrine source rocks is an important and contentious issue. In this study, we present a case study of the Paleogene Hetaoyuan Formation in the Biyang sag, Nanxiang Basin, eastern China.

Hydrocarbon accumulation processes and mechanisms in Lower Jurassic tight sandstone reservoirs in the Kuqa subbasin, Tarim Basin, northwest China: A case study of the Dibei tight gas field

The Dibei gas field is a large tight gas field located in the Kuqa subbasin, Tarim Basin, northwestern China. The reservoir is within the Lower Jurassic Ahe Formation (J1a) and has porosity and permeability ranges of 2%–8% and 0.01–1 md, respectively.

Geochemistry and possible origin of crude oils from Bashituo oil field, Tarim Basin

The entire range of hydrocarbons in Bashituo oils from Devonian and Carboniferous reservoirs were investigated to determine their origin, as well as their alteration, mixing, and maturity using gas chromatography, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and stable carbon isotope analysis.
