Following many years of on again/off again activity, the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) was, at long last, being proven in recent months to be a viable commercial play, but the market has done a 180-degree spin owing to the unanticipated, near-devastating drop in oil prices.

Like numerous other geologic formations, the allure of the Wilcox has waxed and waned owing to fluctuating commodity prices, among other issues. As hydrocarbon prices recovered and technology applications like hydraulic fracturing became commonplace, the Wilcox beckoned anew, attracting principally the mom-and-pop shops and the small to mid-size independents.

The title says it all: Determining Hydrocarbon Distribution Using Resistivity, Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Southwestern Mississippi. The purpose of the study was to investigate the TMS Trend in southwestern Mississippi using electric logs and IHS’s proprietary Petra mapping software to document the structure, stratigraphy and hydrocarbon distribution.

The ever-increasing number of hydraulic fracturing applications used to economically produce shale reservoirs impacts various businesses that profit from this phenomenon. Think sand mining/processing, for example.

Despite its “fits and starts” drilling history, the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale has begun to garner some respect– specifically, it appears to be on the brink of becoming a bona fide commercially productive play.

Independent companies, both large and small, are widely acknowledged for spearheading the shale play phenomenon. “Nimble” usually is the operative word here.

Explorer Foundation Update

It has a new name, a new energy and a new lineup of experts, all primed to spread geoscience knowledge around the world. “It” is AAPG’s newly named Global Distinguished Lecture Program – emphasis on the “global” – which dates back to 1941 but continues to be the Association’s flagship initiative for offering the latest in geologic science to AAPG affiliated geological societies and universities.
