So, what will save the industry this time around, you ask? Look back for a minute at the downturn of the 1980s. Research and development continued in 3-D seismic technology, which was already in use, albeit still costly and needing refinement, during the earlier boom times. As the technology advanced and became more affordable, it revolutionized the way oil and gas is found, leading the industry out of the dark times.

The seismic vessel Orion isn't much to look at, but looks can deceive. Look closer -- look past the vintage and more at the value -- and the Orion becomes proof that a vessel doesn't have to be new to be state-of-the-art.

If seismic acquisition and leasing activity are accurate indicators, the Gulf of Mexico's East Breaks region is on its way to becoming one of the busiest spots in the deep water frontier play.

The legalities of seismic activity in Louisiana are about as murky as the state's ubiquitous bayou waters. Indeed, to say the Mineral Code fails to adequately address the myriad issues indigenous to modern-day 3-D seismic operations there is at best an understatement.

A new study by geoscientists at the University of Texas at Austin gives explorers fresh insight into the depositional history of the Gulf of Mexico -- and it also confirms that the Gulf remains one of the world's great exploration provinces.

For geophysical contractors, typically the first group deployed in a new region for exploration, the 1990s have demanded a keen environmental awareness.

The following short course option was developed for geology and geophysics students that have not had much exposure to how geoscience is applied in industry. It can be tailored for undergraduate juniors and seniors or graduate students. The agenda can be modified to meet specific needs and time constraints.

In comparison with the known boundary conditions that promote salt deformation and flow in sedimentary basins, the processes involved with the mobilization of clay-rich detrital sediments are far less well established. This talk will use seismic examples in different tectonic settings to document the variety of shale geometries that can be formed under brittle and ductile deformations.
