Pre-conference meetings for regulatory agencies and ministries are a standard feature at the International Conference and Exhibition and the Energy Opportunities Conference, events held in AAPG’s Latin America and Caribbean Region in the past decade. Usually, the regulatory agency’s chairman from the host country presides over the three or four-hour session. Mexico’s National Hydrocarbon Commission invited representatives from eight governmental agencies and four professional and industry associations to join them at Mexico’s National Hydrocarbons Core Center.

Shale Plays Led the Way in Colorado’s Pioneer Days

Colorado’s hydrocarbon industry was built on the foundation of early explorers and field geologists venturing through rough and often dangerous terrain, surveying and mapping in a young nation at a time when geology was in its technological infancy. Without even the aid of a Brunton compass (patented 1894) early geologists, such as Ferdinand Hayden and John Powell, created the beginnings of Colorado’s geological knowledge through exceptional skill and work, upon which we continue to build today.

Reservoir Characterization Processes Explained with Workflows, Flowcharts

The processing of land seismic data entails a series of steps through which the data passes, including sorting, static correction, deconvolution, residual static correction, velocity analysis, migration, stacking, filtering and scaling. Some tasks, such as velocity analysis, are interactive, while others are automated. The processing of seismic data from the same area often follows the same proven series of steps or sequence, barring any unforeseen issues that need to be addressed. Such a sequence of tasks designed to process data from their initiation to completion is referred to as a “workflow.”

Opportunities in the Energy Trilemma

National and international energy companies today face enormous pressure from government, shareholders and society to meet increasing demand and deliver profits while meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and progressing toward a transition away from fossil fuels. The Energy Trilemma – the capacity to provide energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability simultaneously – is a term developed and measured by the World Energy Council since 2010. Whether they use “Energy Trilemma” or another term, industry leaders face daily decisions about how to provide reliable, sustainable energy for all while reducing CO2 emissions and developing cleaner energy sources.

A Laboratory for Deepwater Systems

In a world with discussions about Peak Oil and transition away from hydrocarbons, the Caribbean remains a bright spot for traditional oil and gas exploration. From Trinidad and Tobago’s 100-year hydrocarbon industry in the north to massive discoveries in the Guyana Suriname Basin in Northern South America, there’s good reason why companies around the world are focused on the region. Alaska’s North Slope Holds ‘Incredible’ Promise, and Controversy

A New Century, Renewed Vision

We joined the Houston Geological Society shortly after arriving in Houston as new-hire geologists in 1984. We met thousands of fellow geoscientists by attending, and organizing, hundreds of technical talks for 39 years. We learned about exciting discoveries, plays and technology from those who made them happen. Along the way, we became friends with a few legends. We are grateful for the deep friendships that arose while serving as HGS volunteers. With a grateful heart, we are happy to share our committee’s plans to celebrate the centennial year.

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, "Basin Modeling of Thermicity and Diachronism of South Atlantic Rifted Margin: An Example from the Presalt of Brazil", on Wednesday, 4 May 2022, 8:00 AM (CST). Rifted margins contain prolific petroleum systems due to their unique crustal evolution, which frequently causes very favorable combinations of source rock deposition, heat flow evolution, and structural/stratigraphic trap configuration. Structural restoration and basin modeling help understand observed geometries and thermal data, suggesting a strong diachronism between heat flow and structuring/faulting. These concepts and their implications are highlighted with an example from the pre-salt basins in offshore Brazil.
