A discussion of how improved geochronology indicates that extension and basin formation in northern Mexico took place nearly continuously throughout the Jurassic, with waning influence of magmatism on stratigraphic successions toward the beginning of the Late Jurassic.

The AAPG course on “Rock/Fluid Interactions and Natural Fracture Development and Alteration” provides a practical approach to defining reservoir fluid and pressure related natural fracture generation and fracture property alteration in conventional and unconventional reservoirs. This course is part of AAPG’s upcoming Fundamentals Education Conference, taking place November 9-13, in Houston, TX.

The past 30+ years have witnessed a wide variety of exploration strategies and a number of technological “revolutions” in the search for oil and gas. Although the exploration landscape and tools of the trade are so different than they were in the early 1980’s, in one aspect we appear to have come full circle, realizing that a deep understanding of our basins is the critical element in any success.

The generation of point bars by lateral accretion during lateral expansion and downstream translation of river meanders is a well described process, and a primary means for generation of sandy bar reservoirs within fluvial strata. Further examination of this process in modern and ancient settings points, however, to a wide variation on this simple theme.

Sequence stratigraphy is an evolving field that has thus defied all attempts at formalization. Part of this resistance to stability is because central assumptions core to the science maintain scrutiny and occasionally undergo either modification or full refute.

The Antarctic continent, which is nearly completely covered by a thick ice sheet, and the surrounding ocean with its fringing belt of sea-ice, ice shelves and drifting icebergs, offer challenges to geological investigations that seek to unravel the history of one of Earth's last frontiers.

Production from self-sourced reservoirs relies on natural and induced fracturing to enhance permeability and produce connected pathways for hydrocarbons to flow back to producing wellbores; thus, natural or induced fracturing is key to the success of unconventional reservoir plays. In addition to enhancing production, large or well-connected fractures or faults may cause undesirable complications for production.

Natural and induced fractures are influenced by: (i) mechanical stratigraphy, (ii) preexisting natural deformation such as faults, fractures, and folds, and (iii) in situ stress conditions, which includes both natural stresses and stresses modified by stimulation and pressure depletion (Ferrill et al. 2014b). Understanding the occurrence and controls on natural and induced faulting and fracturing in self-sourced reservoirs is a key component for developing effective approaches for exploiting hydrocarbons within self-sourced reservoirs.

During the last glacial maximum (LGM), the Antarctic ice sheets expanded, reaching the shelf break in many places, including in the Antarctic Peninsula (AP); since the end of the LGM (~14,000 years ago) ice has retreated back to its current position, leaving a suite of subglacial geomorphic features on the seafloor. Sedimentary archives sequestered in deep fjords have formed under marine conditions, recording the ongoing glacial retreat and climatic fluctuations.

This course is designed to give participants the basic working tools to explore and develop hydrocarbons in salt basins. Because no two basins are alike, the focus is on understanding the processes and styles of salt-related deformation. At course completion participants should be able to under the depositional setting of layered evaporites, describe the mechanics of salt flow, interpret salt and stratal geometries associated with diapirs, salt welds, and minibasins, and assess more accurately the risks in the exploration of salt basins.

Sequence stratigraphy provides a framework for the integration of geological, geophysical, biostratigraphic and engineering data, with the aim of predicting the distribution of reservoir, source rock and seal lithologies. It gives the geoscientist a powerful predictive tool for regional basin analysis, shelf-to-basin correlation, and characterization of reservoir heterogeneity. This course will examine the underlying geological principles, processes and terminology related to sequence stratigraphic interpretation. The strength of this course is the application of these basic principles to subsurface datasets in a series of well-founded exercises.

We invite you to share your experience on new approaches, new tools and new ways of integrating geological and geophysical information that can help in reducing the uncertainties related to the characterization and modeling of carbonate sequences and reservoirs.

  • Carbonate depositional environments and facies architecture
  • Carbonate diagenesis and its impact on reservoir quality
  • Factors controlling the characteristics of fracture networks in carbonate reservoirs
  • Petrophysic and pore network characteristics of carbonate rocks
  • Integrated reservoir modeling of carbonate reservoirs
  • Case studies on carbonate sequences and reservoirs
