AAPG and the AAPG Latin America and Caribbean Region express both shock and profound sadness upon learning that three young geologists were killed by armed insurgents last night while conducting field work in the Northern area of Colombia’s Antioquia department.
Henry Martínez, Laura Flórez and Camilo Tirado held great promise, both as members of Colombia’s geoscience community and as future leaders of our region’s energy industry. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends and colleagues.
Henry was a member of our AAPG family. He participated in the Imperial Barrel Award Region Semifinals in 2015 and served as AAPG Student Chapter President while a student at the University of the Andes in Bogotá.
Henry posted the following message on Linked In after participating in the Latin America and Caribbean Region’s Student and Young Professional Leadership Summit just last month.
“I am pleased to be part of the generation facing the challenge of making possible the transition to renewables while optimizing the current exploration and production for supplying society needs in a responsible way. It’s not about industry but energy. The planet trusts in us and, as geoscientists, we accept our duty. It’s time to commit.”
