Africa Region Leadership Meeting IMAGE 2023

Published
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

The Africa Region was well represented and active during the recent 2023 IMAGE in Houston, with more than a dozen Region members – including current officers, past officers and delegates – gathered for its official onsite meeting.

Attendees at the meeting discussed current membership demographics and considered individual concerns facing the Region as well as the Association overall. Ideas also were shared regarding growth and opportunities in the Region, as was:

  • Reactivation of Regional student chapters, considered by all to be an urgent priority.
  • The need to increase the Region’s volunteer base, which is important for further outreach and successful completion of desired objectives throughout the Region, especially amid a continuing decline in membership, limited financial support, and the elimination of designated staff support.

Those interested in serving are encouraged to contact Africa Region Leaders, listed on the Region home page.

In other IMAGE matters, the representatives celebrated the presence of those from or connected to the Region who were recognized and honored at the meeting with AAPG awards. They included:

  • Nosa Omorodion (Michel T. Halbouty Outstanding Leadership Award)
  • Oluseye Ekun (Distinguished Service Award)
  • Mimionitu Opuwari (Distinguished Service Award)
  • Philip Ajaebili (Young Professionals Service Award) (unable to attend)
  • Andrea Lopez Vega (Young Professionals Service Award)
  • William “Bill” Bosworth (Vlastimila Dvoráková “Vlasta” International Ambassador Service Award)
