The AAPG 'Ambient Seismic Imaging Throughout the Life Cycles of Unconventional Fields' e-symposia provides an overview of a new ambient seismic imaging method and applications of the method throughout the lifecycles (exploration through refracing) of unconventional oil and/or gas fields.  These applications include: direct imaging of hydraulic fractures, hydraulically stimulated natural fractures, stimulated reservoir volumes, and producing volumes; stress mapping in three dimensions before, during and after fracing; and Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) frac and reservoir simulation.

AAPG is the largest geoscience organization in the free world, and its members know more about frontier areas now being explored than anyone else. Part of our scientific responsibility is to act as advisers, not advocates for one political stand – either for or against climate change. AAPG needs to be part of the conversation.

The key elements for shale resource evaluation are the mineral content – such as clay, quartz and calcite – the total organic carbon (TOC) content, the brittleness and some mechanical properties of the shale rocks. Geomechanical studies are necessary both for understanding wellbore environment stability and also interpreting well log data, by estimating the mechanical properties of the subsurface.

As this EXPLORER issue goes to press, there are three international robotic missions headed to their encounters with Mars this February. The United Arab Emirates’ Hope Mission will enter Mars orbit on Feb. 9, 2021. Its goal is to study Martian atmospheric dynamics and weather. China’s Tianwen-1 Mission is expected to enter Mars orbit on Feb. 10, 2021. A lander with a Mars rover will be deployed in May 2021 for a proposed landing zone in Utopia Planitia. The mission goals are to find evidence for current and past life, characterize Martian soil composition, and map water ice distribution. The NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory Mars Perseverance rover is scheduled to land at Jezero Crater on Mars on Feb. 18, 2021.
