The Division of Environmental Geosciences (DEG) supports the formation of the proposed Petroleum Structure and Geomechanics Division (PSGD). From its beginning, DEG has participated in and supported AAPG’s mission of “advancing the science” and sharing this information with our members. Any of you who are members of other geological societies know that the pipeline for dissemination of information are the “sub-groups’ within those societies. They bring members and scientists with like interests together to discuss and refine ideas and concepts that have led to the breakthroughs that have pushed our profession to its current place.

Because of new technology and the high cost of disposal of produced saltwater, and the even high cost of disposing of flowback from stimulation (usually hydraulic fracturing), but also acidizing and other treatments, treating and purifying produced water to the point that it is useable in EOR and in hydraulic fracturing is an attractive option, particularly if hauling costs are not too high, and also the quality can be assured.
