American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

AAPG Asia Pacific is proud to host two new AAPG Asia Pacific Presents talks, featuring Dr. Lorna J. Strachan and Dr. Basim Faraj.

AAPG Asia Pacific Presents is a collection of online presentations being offered free of charge. The 60-90 minute session will be conducted through Zoom, and will be followed by a short Q&A period, handled by a moderator. To register for one or both of these talks, click on the link(s) below. Understanding Contemporary Sedimentary Processes of the Deep-marine Hikurangi Channel, New Zealand: A Modern Analogue for Sub-surface Convergent

Thursday, 4 February 2021 • 11:00 AM (SGT) - Singapore Time Zone
Dr. Lorna J. Strachan, University of Auckland, New Zealand

Off the East coast of New Zealand lies one of Earth’s longest and most enigmatic deep-sea channels, the colossal c.2000 km. long Hikurangi Channel. Unlike submarine channels of a similar size, it is located along the convergent Hikurangi Subduction Margin. The Kaikōura Mw 7.8 2016 earthquake, revealed significant sediment flushing of multiple canyons and generation of a co-seismic turbidity current. Here I will use shallow sediment cores from the Hikurangi Channel to demonstrate a staggering array of Holocene gravity flow processes. I will highlight longitudinal and lateral deposit variability for 600 km that reveals insights into turbidity current flow structure and vertical and longitudinal stratification. These observations will be placed in a temporal context using 14C radiocarbon and tephra-stratigraphy ages. These results will provide a useful insight into the spatial variability of an active channel system that can be easily translated to subsurface analogues.

Dr. Lorna Strachan is a Senior Lecturer of Sedimentology whose research focuses on understanding the physical processes that redistribute sediment in the deepest depths of the ocean. She is a researcher in the fields of turbidity currents and soft-sediment deformation, where she focuses on using deposits to understand flow process dynamics. She has conducted research into understanding submarine slope dynamics and processes from tectonically active and passive margins around the world. Her research is multi-disciplinary integrating modern seafloor bathymetry and core data, with ancient outcrop and seismic data. To date, Lorna has supervised more than 60 post-graduate student projects.

The Base of Fish Scales Formation; Western Canada Sedimentary Basin: A Hybrid Stealth Shale Gas Play

Thursday, 18 February 2021 • 10:00 AM (SGT) - Singapore Time Zone
Dr. Basim Faraj, Faraj Consultants Pty. Ltd., Australia

The Base of Fish Scales Formation (BFSF) is basin-wide and marks the Albian/Cenomanian unconformity (Lower/Upper Cretaceous) boundary at the foreland Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). The formation contains abundant fish remains within finely laminated, generally non-bioturbated, very fine sandstone, siltstone, tuff, and organic-rich mudstones. Regional log mapping of the formation, as well as geochemical studies, facies, and new core analyses integration, allowed the elucidation of the main controls on BFSF productivity. The interplay between volcanic ash falls from Western Cordillera’s super volcanic eruptions, fish kill, authigenic dolomite, hydroxylapatite precipitation, the preservation of organic carbon, and the sedimentation of sand/silt layers through storm action during major regression resulted in the preservation of this unique play. EOG Resources Canada and others have completed hundreds of vertical wells in the BFSF as either a stand-alone production zone or co-mingled with other producing zones. Production profiles show a classic unconventional pattern.

Dr. Basim Faraj received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geochemistry from The University of Queensland, Australia in 1996. In 2002, he led a team that completed the first shale gas potential study in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, for the Gas Technology Institute (GTI). He has extensive managerial, professional, and technical expertise in unconventional resources. Worked extensively on North America and Australian shales (particularly the Beetaloo Basin). Between 2005 and 2010, Basim was the Unconventional Gas Specialist at Talisman Energy, Canada. From 2011 to 2014, Basim was VP New Ventures, Tamboran Resources Pty Ltd. During the last few years, Basim evaluated unconventional projects in Turkey, Poland, Myanmar, Botswana, Namibia, Argentina, India, and Ireland among others. Basim is the Director of Faraj Consultants and an Adjunct Professor at the Science and Engineering Faculty and the Institute for Future Environments, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane.
