I recently returned from an “International External Examiner” trip to the Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Perak, Malaysia. While there, I gave a Visiting Geoscientist presentation titled ”Geological Applications of Capillary Pressure: Learning to Think Like Hydrocarbon”. I had 54 attendees from many of the Asian countries (undergrad & post grad geologists and a smattering of engineering students. Unfortunately, many of them had to leave for class by the time the photo was taken. The following day, I had smaller meetings with 3-5 class representatives from each of the classes (2nd, 3rd, 4th year undergrads + postgrads). We discussed AAPG, career planning, the future of industry, my personal “journey”, as well as probability of success of the Malaysian national football team in the forthcoming Asian Cup and World Cup qualifiers. There was an overall concern voiced by each group about job availability in the industry, especially in the Asia Pacific.
