Geoscientists are playing an active role in addressing sustainable development through ethical considerations as we navigate the energy transition. As the energy landscape evolves, so do the communities around us. It is critical to include all perspectives and background while listening and including the Indigenous voices from these communities as we navigate this landscape. Collaboration with all communities will enable us to shape the energy landscape together. Our speakers will highlight how they are using geoscience to advance sustainability within their respective fields, in addition to the ethical considerations for their projects.

Julian Chenin is passionate leader and geoscientist who is now quantitatively optimizing machine learning algorithms for various geoscience applications at Bluware. He recently completed his MSc in Geophysics at the University of Oklahoma where his thesis work used unsupervised machine learning techniques to better image gas in the subsurface. Julian serves on the AAPG Sustainable Development Committee, the GEO2021 Young Professionals Committee (YPC), and as the incoming alternate USA member of the World Petroleum Council’s YPC for the 2021 – 2023 cycle.

Dr. Rachelle Kernen is currently the South Australian Representative for Women in Earth and Environmental Sciences Australasia (WOMEESA) and a 2023-2024 Superstar of STEM through Science and Technology Australia. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and a recipient of the prestigious Global Talent Visa her current research applies her expertise in sedimentology, stratigraphy, and salt-sediment interaction to subsurface CO2 and H2 storage, and critical mineral deposits. She founded AAPG’s popular Salt Basins Technical Interest Group and was the lead editor for the two AAPG Special Volumes.

Autumn Haagsma is the Director of the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE) and Assistant Director of the Michigan Geological Survey (MGS). She leads research efforts in carbon sequestration, energy storage, community and stakeholder engagement and outreach, and risks. Prior to her current role, Autumn was a lead geologist and team lead at Battelle Memorial Institute, actively involved in numerous CCUS programs
