An AAPG Fall Education Conference Course

Practical Geomechanics

Published
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

Discover the basic fundamentals of structural geology, the response of natural materials to deformation, and what changes occur due to the application of stress and or strain energy. Practical Geomechanics will be covering the many aspects of exploration, assessment and production phases of petroleum reservoir development. The course will be instructed by Dr. David Wiprut, a global discipline head for Baker Hughes/Geomechanics, with many years of experience working on geomechanics problems around the world in the oil and gas industry. With his extensive background Dr. Wiprut offers attendees a first hand look into the basic elements of geomechanics. This course will be part of the 2014 Fall Education Conference and will be taking place Thursday November 13th at the Norris Conference Center-CityCentre in Houston, Texas. Join us to learn some of the most valuable knowledge & insights the industry has to offer.

Course Details

Event: Fall Education Conference
Course: Practical Geomechanics
Instructor(s): David Wiprut
Date: November 13th, 2014 (Thursday)
Location: Norris Conference Center-CityCentre in Houston, Texas
Content: 0.75 CEU Limit: 50 people

Who Should Attend

This course is recommended to geoscientists and engineers in the petroleum and geothermal industries, and for research scientists interested in stress measurements and their application to problems arising from rock failure.

Objectives

By the end of the course the participant should be able to:

  • Identify situations where geomechanics can be applied profitably
  • Determine the impact of critically-stressed fractures on drilling and production
  • Find the causes of stress perturbations
  • Define different modes of rock failure and deformation
  • Identify the causes of fault slip and the consequences

Course Content

This interdisciplinary course encompasses the fields of rock mechanics, structural geology and petroleum engineering to address a wide range of geomechanical problems that arise during the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs. We will be covering the exploration, assessment and production phases of petroleum reservoir development.

2014 Fall Education Conference

The three concurrent sessions allow attendees to mix and match courses according to their interests and training needs. Courses for the conference may be purchased individually. These individual prices are reflected in the pricing on the course descriptions.

Course notes will be provided in digital format on USB flash drive only, so electronic devices with a USB port are required for all courses. If you do not have access to an electronic device with a USB port, please contact the AAPG Education Dept. for an alternate method to download the digital course notes.
