American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

After two successful editions, the AAPG Carbonate Reservoirs of the Middle East GTW came back the region for a third round. The event took place from 28-29 January 2020 at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa. The workshop attracted 94 attendees from 30 different companies and 10 different countries.

The opening of the workshop, which took place on 28 January morning, included an inaugural keynote speech delivered by Mr. Ahmed Al-Riyami - Vice-President – Field Development, ADNOC Offshore followed by a technical keynote on “Carbonate Rocks Operational Geomechanics: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Energy and a Safe Environment” by Mr. Mohammed Ameen, Geomechanics and Fractures Consultant. In addition, AAPG awarded and recognized Mr. Abdulla Al Mansoori, ADNOC Onshore, for his valuable contribution in the creation of the Carbonate Reservoirs of the Middle East Series.

The two-day workshop also included 17 oral presentations, 16 poster presentations and 4 different types of core which were on display for the duration of the event. Two optional field trips took place the day after the workshop. Abdelwahab Noufal, ADNOC Upstream and Ibrahim Al Ali, ADNOC Onshore guided the participants to Jebal Hafit where they had the opportunity to study the structural style and fracturing of carbonate rocks analogous to reservoir units of the globally important UAE oil province. Meanwhile, Hesham Shebl, ADNOC Upstream and Ismail Al Hoseni, ADNOC Onshore lead the field trip to the modern carbonate-evaporite depositional environments along the Abu Dhabi shoreline and offshore Abu Dhabi.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our most sincere gratitude to the committee members for their hard work and support. We would also like to thank our Platinum Sponsor, ADNOC, for their generous contribution. And last but not least, thanks to all the presenters and attendees for their and commitment and for making this third edition of the Carbonate Reservoirs of the Middle East GTW series possible. We look forward to seeing you all at the next edition!
