Conference Description

This Hedberg research conference will focus on the changes in petroleum systems analysis from the late 1970’s to current day. The goal of this conference is to be a “passing of the torch” with an exchange of ideas from experienced specialists to young professionals. The attendees will be a mix of seasoned experts with a depth of knowledge and historical perspective, and exploration and development petroleum systems staff on the learning curve. The last 30 plus years have seen tremendous change in the methods and technology applied on the analysis and evaluation of geochemistry data and on the building and evaluation of petroleum system models. This conference will provide an open forum where the field’s pioneers will share their knowledge on the history and development of these tools and the up-and-coming petroleum systems staff will share innovative applications and new ideas.

The conference has been subdivided into 6 oral sessions (invited talks) and a poster session (open for abstract submissions). In addition, there will be keynote lectures from world experts who have pioneered petroleum geochemistry and petroleum systems modeling.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Bernie B. Bernard received a Ph.D. in 1978 in chemical oceanography from Texas A&M University. After teaching Organic Geochemistry and Isotope Geochemistry at the University of Oklahoma for two years, he accepted a position as VP of O.I. Analytical, Inc., a supplier of analytical instruments for the determination of organic contaminants in water, soil, and air. In 1993 he joined the Geochemical and Environmental Research Group of Texas A&M University as Deputy Director. In 1996, Dr. Bernard formed TDI-Brooks International, Inc. with his partner, Dr. James M. Brooks, where he currently is the VP/Technology Director. Dr. Bernard's career has focused on the molecular and isotopic compositions of the light hydrocarbon gases in marine sediments, and his models for interpretation of sources of light hydrocarbon gases in marine sediments ("Bernard Plots") are commonly used by scientists worldwide.

Rolando di Primio has worked as a petroleum system analyst in the Norwegian industry with Saga Petroleum, Norsk Hydro and is currently in Lundin Norway. His academic background includes a PhD in organic geochemistry and a postdoc position in basin modelling at the KFA Juelich, Germany, working as a senior research scientist at the GeoForschungs-Zentrum Potsdam and an adjunct professorship of petroleum geosciences at Jacobs University Bremen. In addition he was co-founder of GeoS4 GmbH, a consulting and service company specializing in compositional kinetic models. His research interest include petroleum phase behavior, basin modelling and organic geochemistry. He has published over 70 peer reviewed papers.

Dr. Andrew Murray is a former principle advisor on petroleum systems analysis for Woodside Energy Ltd., Australia's largest oil and gas producer. Prior to joining Woodside he was a senior research scientist with Geoscience Australia and has also worked in marine science and in analytical chemistry He now runs his own consulting and training company, Murray Partners PPSA.

Joseph Curiale Petroleum geochemist. Formerly with Unocal and Chevron for 34 years. Geochemical expertise throughout the petroleum industry value chain, with emphases on petroleum and source rock geochemistry, basin modeling, database management and play risking. Experience with multiple journals as an executive editor, associate editor and peer reviewer. Currently an independent consultant (Geochemical Advisory Services).

Oil or gas in trap, Contacts and extent of HC systems
Hi Richard, These are excellent questions. In addition to Andrew's talk, the papers by Jan Mayer about the Great South Basin and Lukasz Krawczynski on PNG fold and thrust belt will both address the critical "oil or gas" question. Jan's talk will also cover what controls the contact. I hope to see you at the conference too... Zhiyong

In reply to "oil or gas in trap" (Dick Bishop)
Hi Dick, I have just submitted an abstract entitled: "Oil vs. gas: What are the limits to prospect-level hydrocarbon phase prediction ?" for a keynote lecture. This necessarily will involve discussion of fill/spill/leak processes as they bear on phase a la Gussow and your own writings on the matter. Hope to see you there. Kind Regards, Andrew Murray

what controls the contacts?
Will there be a discussion on what controls oil/water, gas/oil or gas/water contacts?

oil or gas in the trap?
Many sources yield both oil and gas simultaneously. I did not see anything listed that indicated there will be discussion of predicting oil vs. gas in the trap. What happens when both free gas and oil meet at the trap? Does gas always displace oil? Why/ why not?

mapping hc systems
I'm not sure of the breadth contained in 'maturation modeling' and 'integrated hydrocarbon system analysis' but a discussion of how to make maps from these types of data requires interpretation and I suggest a discrete session/ discussion period is appropriate. Many of today's experts at data acquisition have never mapped the extent of a system. In many/ some cases the extent of the system defines the extent of the hc occurrence and is a more valuable map than even the basin outline. In contrast, some systems overlap one another... how might that be mapped? in short, How are people defining the areal extent of systems.
