Marian completed a bachelor’s degree in geology and astronomy/physics at Williams College, Massachusetts. After a term as an instructor and astronomical observatory technician at Williams, she pursued geology, completing an M.S. at the University of Vermont (mapping thesis in Appalachian structure and tectonics), and a PhD at Queen’s University, Canada, with a field-based thesis focusing on stratigraphic, structural and thermal evolution of a segment of the Canadian Cordillera west of Calgary.

She joined EnCana Corporation (Calgary) in 1997, where until 2008 she held roles as geologist, geophysical interpreter and structural specialist. Her focus was on exploration in new or known structurally-influenced plays in the Alberta foreland basin and foothills, the Quebec Appalachians, the central African rift system in Chad, as well as on exploration for unconventional gas in the French Aquitaine Basin. Marian was a member of the technical team responsible for EnCana’s Banff D Pool discovery in 2001 (~100 mmcf/d gas at peak production). At EnCana she also served for several years on both domestic and international technical peer review committees.

Marian was a winner of the CSPG Medal of Merit in 2003 and of the AAPG Matson (Best Paper) Award in 2004, both for technical excellence and presentation/publication in petroleum geoscience. She served as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer in 2006-2007, in the category of Case Studies in exploration, showcasing examples of carbonate and clastic new play exploration and success in the Alberta basin.

Since 2008 she has been an independent consultant in Calgary, Canada, as Owner/President of Jenner GeoConsulting Inc. Marian offers expertise worldwide in structural geology/tectonics, new play exploration, and professional training. From 2009 – 2014 Marian was also an Associate of Rock Deformation Research Ltd. (acquired by Schlumberger in 2014) based in Leeds, U.K.

Recent consulting projects have included structurally complex exploration plays in Albania, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kurdistan, Peru, Colombia, West Africa and western North America. Most projects have been in fold-thrust settings and have included activities such as basin-scale evaluation of petroleum potential, seismic interpretation, structural cross section construction and restoration, prospect generation/evaluation, farmout efforts and well planning.

Marian has co-developed and presented numerous petroleum industry structural geology training courses and field trips with Dr. Mark Cooper of Sherwood GeoConsulting Inc. Client organizations have included the CSEG, CSPG, Nautilus Geoscience Training Alliance, and many individual corporate clients. Classroom courses have been presented in Canada, the U.K., Europe, Africa, the Middle East, SE Asia and South America. Field courses include extensional, compressional, strike slip, tectonic inversion and foreland basin settings and have been run in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and France/Spain.
