The world's premier professional association for explorationists
Since its founding in 1917, the AAPG has sought to foster scientific research, advance the science of geology, and promote innovation. Our mission remains the same today—with a wider reach than ever. We serve the students and professionals who work to advance subsurface exploration, production, and/or new energy resources.
AAPG is a nonprofit corporation recognized by the IRS as an Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(6) organization.

- Advancing economic and environmentally sound production and procurement technology
- Fostering the spirit of scientific research throughout its membership
- Disseminating geological and technological information relating to petroleum, natural gas, other subsurface fluids, and mineral resources
- Inspiring and maintaining a high standard of professional conduct from its members
- Providing the public with the means to recognize trained and professionally responsible geologists
- Advancing its members’ professional well-being
Who We Are
AAPG’s membership includes more than 14,000 geologists, engineers, academics, c-suiters, and more, spanning more than 40 countries. AAPG Foundation
The AAPG Foundation has served the next generation of leaders in exploration for the past 50 years. Through scholarships, grants, awards, and publications, the AAPG Foundation is committed to collaborating and disseminating the latest in geoscience research, as well as supporting those who study, teach, and research oil and gas exploration.
The AAPG Foundation is a separate entity from the AAPG, and is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3).
Why Join AAPG?
As an AAPG member, you position yourself among the field’s expert professionals and have the opportunity to network with interdisciplinary professionals in emerging areas of science, technology, and energy solutions.
You also receive special discounts and the earliest access to in-person events, educational webinars, field trips, short courses, and more. Finally, you gain access to new research studies and energy industry news that will keep you ahead of the curve.
What is Petroleum Geology?
Petroleum geology is the study of the earth’s formations and subsurface with the intent to locate and extract oil and natural gas. The study of petroleum geology is in many ways, the study of reservoirs, and a deep understanding of the subsurface allows the application of the knowledge to all kinds of uses, ranging from energy storage, geothermal energy, critical minerals in reservoir fluids, hydrogen, helium, and more.
